But lately, as I&#8217;ve visited the site more frequently, I&#8217;ve noticed some major flaws that I&#8217;d like to point out.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"> </p>
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">Firstly, a lot of the stories are just lightly rewritten press releases, stories lifted straight from the AAP wire or worse, rewritten stories from other news organisations. Where&#8217;s the journalism?</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"> </p>
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">Secondly, the style is rather racy and tabloid-inspired - not to my liking, especially when it comes to headline writing (take, for example, two stories on the site today: <a title="Penis in schoolbag - kiddie porn or just child's play?" href="http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/articles/2008/10/14/1223750025132.html" target="_blank">Penis is schoolbag: kiddie porn or just child&#8217;s play?</a> and <a title="Man's 'genitals set alight before he was shot'" href="http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/news/national/mans-genitals-set-alight-before-he-was-shot/2008/10/15/1223750120308.html" target="_blank">Man&#8217;s &#8216;genitals set alight before he was shot&#8217;</a>).</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"> </p>
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">But the biggest problem, for me, is the lack of local content. For a website that bills itself as Brisbane-based, there is often precious little local content on the site &#8211; especially compared to the rival <a title="Courier Mail" href="http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/" target="_blank">Courier Mail </a>website.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"> </p>
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">In addition, the Courier Mail often beats the Brisbane Times by hours when reporting on breaking news. I know which site is my first port of call.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"> </p>
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">Maybe I&#8217;m biased. The Courier Mail is News Limited and so am I! But I&#8217;d like to see some current circulation figures to see if others have noticed the flaws.</span></p>

<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">At first this annoyed me. <p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">But Guiner firmly believes that &#8220;<a title="The new Revista Unica (3) - Fantastic reactions" href="http://www.innovationsinnewspapers.com/index.php/2008/09/14/the-new-revista-unica-3-fantastic-reactions/" target="_blank">good journalism sells</a>&#8220;, whatever platform it is presented in.</span></p>

<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">Here are just a couple of the ingredients that make up Guiner&#8217;s recipe for success:</span></p>
<ul style="text-align: left">
<li>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">Newspapers need to <a title="Stocks plunge and La Segunda, an evening Chilean newspaper, covers the breaking news" href="http://www.innovationsinnewspapers.com/index.php/2008/09/29/stocks-plunge-and-la-segunda-an-evening-chilean-newspaper-covers-the-breakingnews/" target="_blank">react quickly</a> to remain in the game.</span></div>
</li>
<li>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:"><a title="One picture, the same front page, and the real daily dilemma for newspapers around the world" href="http://www.innovationsinnewspapers.com/index.php/2008/09/22/one-picture-same-front-pages-and-the-real-daily-dilemma-for-newspapers-around-the-world" target="_blank">Newspapers</a> must report exclusively, deliver solutions (not just problems), and provide analysis and the news behind the news.</span></div>
</li>
<li><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">Journalists, especially print journos, need to do all this while <a title="The crisis in plain English - Chris Desbarres" href="http://www.innovationsinnewspapers.com/index.php/2008/09/24/the-crisis-in-plain-english-chris-desbarres/" target="_blank">writing for their audience</a>, not just relaying expert mumbo-jumbo.</span></li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">I&#8217;d like to add my own ingredient: Newsrooms must foster attitudes that embrace change. Too often in my workplace I see people committed to doing things the old way and resisting change. Times are a&#8217; changing &#8211; let&#8217;s keep up!</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:"><span style="font-size: 11pt;font-family:">–</span> Koren</span></p>

<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">But STOMP cleverly merges user-generated content with traditional journalism in a different way. It allows ordinary citizens to send in photos, news tips, even whole stories (in almost any format you can imagine), which are then re-worked by qualified journalists/producers.</span></p>

<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">But the truly great things about STOMP is its unassuming attitude about what constitutes news. The &#8216;<a title="STOMP - About Us" href="http://www.stomp.com.sg/about/about.html" target="_blank">about us</a>&#8216; page puts it simply: </span></p>

<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">I’ve seen how handy RSS feeds (“really simple syndication”/”rich site summary”) can be when job hunting: the jobs come to you! Wilson lists a whole gamut of &#8220;thinking outside the square&#8221; options, including streaming audio and video advertising or <a title="Online project challenges traditional advertising model" href="http://www.textually.org/tv/archives/2008/02/019255.htm" target="_blank">getting users to create the advert</a> and then on-selling it.</span></p>

<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">But the idea that struck me as most interesting was the <a title="A Totally Free, Ridiculouly Simple Business Model" href="http://freebusinessmodel.com/" target="_blank">Rhodes brothers’ suggestion about selling emails</a>. Essentially, it involves making people pay for information that is also available for free&#8230; <em>somewhere</em> on the net. As the <a title="Why Would Anyone PAY For Free Information?" href="http://imsimple.com/why-would-anyone-pay-for-free-information/" target="_blank">Rhodes brothers suggest</a>, people will pay because it makes finding what they want quicker and easier.</span></p>

<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">It’s a concept that could work for print-turned-onliners. Local businesses could take out adverts in the relevant news emails and be sure they are targeting fellow locals. </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"> </p>
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">Then there&#8217;s the free-to-use News Limited concept, <a title="TrueLocal" href="http://www.truelocal.com.au/" target="_blank">TrueLocal</a>, where everyone gets a listing and businesses pay to upload more content.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;text-align: left"><span style="font-size: 10pt;font-family:">I like this option best. A tight-ass at heart, I’ll always be prepared to spend a little longer finding my <a title="Banana Cake Recipe" href="http://www.bananacakerecipe.com.au/banana-cake-recipe.asp?id=2" target="_blank">banana cake recipe</a> (yes, tasty as tested by <em>moi</em>) the free way. Although as <a title="Free! Why $0 Is the Future of Business" href="http://www.wired.com/techbiz/it/magazine/16-03/ff_free" target="_blank">Chris Anderson points out</a>, I&#8217;m probably paying without realising! But then, this is the age-old essence of marketing.</span></p>
